KOTA MARUDU: Five people killed while 12 others injured when the express bus they were travelling in skidded and crashed at Jalan Marak Parak near Kampung Surun-surun here today.
It was learnt that the bus was rented by Sandakan Polytechnic and the driver lost control of the wheel when going downhill.
In the 5pm incident, the bus crashed into a barricade by the roadside and overturned.
District police chief Superintendant Mohd Izaan Abdullah, when contacted, said the bus was travelling towards Kudat from Sandakan.
He said police were in the process of gathering information about all the passengers as the accident site has no communication network.
“Five passengers were confirmed dead at the Lotong Hospital here. At the moment, the bus passengers are believed to be Sandakan Polytechnic staff and family members,” he said.
Izaan said police were investigating the accident under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 7.
