Woman in labour being driven to hospital killed in Kulim crash

ALOR STAR: Two people, including a pregnant woman in labour, were killed and four others injured in a collision between two cars at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park near Kulim, early today.

The dead were identified as nine-months-pregnant Maziah Shaa'ri, 31 and her brother-in-law Muhammad Ghani Abd Razak, 26, Bernama reported.

Both died of serious injuries in the 6.27am incident.

The injured comprise three other passengers of the car bearing Maziah – including her 2-year-old son – and the 37-year-old driver of the Proton Saga they collided with.

It is learnt that Maziah, accompanied by four family members, was being rushed from Taman Mutiara, Sungai Kob, in Kulim to a hospital to deliver her baby when the accident occurred at an intersection.

“The car driven by Muhammad Ghani was hit on the front, right side by the Proton Saga.

"We believe that one of the cars did not stop at the intersection, thus causing the accident. But we are continuing with our investigation. It is still too early for us to make a conclusion,” Kulim district police chief Superintendent Ahmad Nasir Jaafar told Bernama.
