No place for liberalism in the promotion of LGBT lifestyle, says Mujahid

KUALA LUMPUR: The government firmly denounces any liberalist movement that seek to abolish civil and syariah laws that govern lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) activities.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof said the government had also never allowed any efforts to promote LGBT lifestyle, including same-sex marriage.

"The government does not accept any liberalist movement that seek to promote LGBT lifestyle and same-sex marriage while trying to abolish related provisions under the civil law or the State Syariah Criminal Procedure Enactment.

"On the other hand, efforts are ongoing to strengthen family units in the context of our country with a man (father), a woman (mother) and children from a union that is legal,” he said.

He said this in a written reply to Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah (UMNO-Lenggong BN) who sought clarification if the government was more interested to acknowledge the rights of LGBT people than upholding the tenets of Islam.

Mujahid said the government's stand on the LGBT community was to provide guidance for the members in order to allow them to have a better life in line with the demands of the religion.

"The government is committed to help them, from being sex workers to getting career guidance and learning the appropriate skills in life.

"At the same time, the members should consider the cultural sensitivities while adapting to the society," he said.
