School education's LINUS programme to end next year

KOTA KINABALU: Education Ministry will do away with the Literacy and Numeracy Screening programme (LINUS) starting next year.

Education director-general Datuk Dr Amin Senin, however, said schools would implement their own programmes according to its own students’ capabilities in reading, arithmetic and writing skills.

He said the ministry’s approach was to give opportunities to schools to identify and solve own problems.

“This approach, whether (implemented) at the ministry-level, state Education Department and district Education office will provide support towards programmes designed by the respective school.

“Every school should have their own initiative to formulate own programme according to the needs of the pupils,” he said after an Executive Talk session with teachers in Sabah here.

Amin said the move to terminate LINUS was among others, to stop providing package or module to schools.

LINUS programme was introduced in Aug, 2009 as part of the National Key Result Area for Education under Government Transformation programme to ensure all Primary 3 pupils master the three mentioned basic skills.

As for the results of Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) yesterday, he added emphasis on fun-learning concept had proven that the national education system was on the right track.

Without elaborating in details on the examination results, he said UPSR this year had achieved its target as the percentage of students who failed had seen a decrease as compared to previous years.

“Through this (interactive and fun learning) method, number of students (with straight As) have increased despite many (people) being worried that there would be less number of excellent students,” he added.
