Zahid asks if Liew attended Cabinet meeting to decide on army deployment in Yemen

KUALA LUMPUR: Former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has raised questions on the allegations that the military had involved in Yemen's war without the permission from the Cabinet.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also UMNO President, questioned whether Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong, who disclosed the matter yesterday, was in the Cabinet meeting under the previous administration to enable him to make such claim.

"I want to ask whether he (Liew) was involved in the Cabinet meeting then," he told the media at the Parliament lobby today.

He said this when asked about Liew's claim at the Dewan Rakyat that former Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein did not receive Cabinet approval for army deployment in Ops Yaman 2.

The military’s involvement in Ops Yemen 2 was to provide logistical support for the Arab Alliance military operations in Yemen.

Chin Tong also claimed that the former Defence Minister did not agree to the proposal made by the Royal Malaysian Air Force for the troops to be withdrawn in 2016 following high operating and maintenance costs.
