Syed Saddiq: We won partly because of PTPTN, don't let it be our downfall

SHAH ALAM: The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) issue should be handled properly as it is one of the main factors that led to Pakatan Harapan (PH) capturing Putrajaya.

"PTPTN is one of the factors that made PH the government. Don't let it be the one that brings the government down over this issue," Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said at the Bicara Minda programme organised by Karangkraf, here, today.

Syed Saddiq said it was not impossible for the government to 'fall' should they ignore the grouses being voiced by the youth over the matter.

He was referring to the forced salary deduction scheme announced by PTPTN chairman Wan Saiful Wan Jan which was supposed to come into effect next month.

However, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik today announced that the Cabinet has decided to suspend its implementation in order to obtain input and feedback from stakeholders.

"That is why when PTPTN made the announcement on the new mechanism for repayment, I said it should be brought to the Cabinet meeting," Syed Saddiq said.

The scheme courted criticism since it was announced on Wednesday, mainly from borrowers who will have to pay more according to the percentages set by the scheme as opposed to the amount they have been paying according to previous agreements made with the corporation.
