No ransom call yet on kidnapped fishermen, say Sabah police

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police said no ransom calls have been made by the armed group that kidnapped three fishermen near Pegasus Reef, Kinabatangan, on Dec 6.

State police commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said the latest development was only the confirmation made by one of the fishermen’s wife about the kidnapping and that they had been taken to an undisclosed location in the Philippines.

“That’s all the update we have so far and there has not been any demand (for ransom),” he said when contacted, today.

When asked if the kidnappers are linked to Abu Sayyaf militant group, Omar said the matter is still being investigated.

On Dec 6, three fishermen, identified as Heri Ardiansyah, 19, Jari Abdullah, and Hariadin, 45, were reported missing after their boat was found abandoned.

It was understood that one of the kidnapped victims is a local and not Indonesian as reported previously.

On Dec 5, about 6.30am, four armed men hijacked a tug boat carrying 12 crew members consisting of locals and Indonesians near the Pegasus Reef waters.

The skipper Didy Saviady, 40, injured his thigh after the hijackers opened fire while the rest of the crew members were unhurt.
