Anwar: There are people trying to pit me against Tun M

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim claimed there were those who are intent on creating suspicion and distrust between him and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, with the ultimate aim of severing their good relationship.

“I am aware of the many assumptions and impressions that are being made by certain quarters given the recent exodus of Umno members of parliament from that party.

“I continue to support the efforts and leadership of Dr Mahathir, and will continue to work closely with him to realise the Reformasi agenda as has been agreed upon,” he said in a statement via Twitter.

Anwar said Pakatan Harapan had been given a mandate to bring about a government that stands firmly against corruption and narrow racial sentiment and he will remain focused on doing just that.

“We are also focused on developing the economy and lightening the burden of the rakyat, especially among the lower income group.”

Anwar’s statement comes in the wake of the recent spate of Umno elected representatives quitting the party, which has led to widespread conspiracy theories about new alliances and allegiances being formed.

Certain quarters have gone to town claiming the whole crisis within Umno had been orchestrated as part of a bigger power play which could reshape the political scene in the country.
