Penang student crowned 'Top in the World' for A-Levels maths

KUALA LUMPUR: Hard work + undying passion = success and international recognition.

This is the winning formula for a Malaysian A-Levels student who was recently crowned “Top in the World” for the subject of mathematics by Cambridge Assessment International Education.

A Science student at KDU Penang University College, Teh Yu Xuan scored 100 out of 100 in the demanding A-Levels mathematics paper – an achievement which both surprised and delighted him, a local English daily reported.

The 19-year-old told the daily that although he had loved the subject since primary school, he doubted he could score full marks for the A-Levels exam.

His unexpected success has now spurred his ambitions further, and Teh is currently considering pursuing Pure Mathematics or Applied Mathematics.

On receiving his award at the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards 2018 ceremony last month, Teh attributed his triumph to his “very supportive” parents, a conducive study environment, and a good study plan.

Teh may be Top in the World, but he’s definitely down-to-earth.

According to a local English daily, the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards are handed out to top scorers in the various Cambridge A-Levels papers in 40 countries each year.
