Police monitoring attempts to stoke racial tension on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities are aware of the acts of some social media users who are fanning the flames of racial sentiments via their postings on the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

The inflammatory postings, via poems, images and video clips, appear to be aimed at inciting anger over the cause of Adib’s death.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim, said the police are aware of these postings and are pursuing the matter.

“I wish to stress that we will take stern action on any attempt to disseminate reports or news which are seditious or racially-provocative in nature.

“Leave it to the police to track down the individuals who caused Adib’s death. We have been increasing our efforts in the case,” he told NSTP.

He said police will take action on the acts of several irresponsible quarters who are instigating unrest and urging others to riot or cause trouble.

Police, he said, have already recorded statements from various witnesses over the attack on Adib, which has since been reclassified as a murder case.

Meanwhile, former Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Rahim Noor, said leaving such acts unchecked would be detrimental to the nation’s racial and religious harmony.

“Individuals or groups behind these provocations, regardless of what race they are, have to be checked immediately as their actions could cause racial tension.

“I urge the police to investigate and bring them to justice as a lesson to those who are thinking of doing the same thing,” he said.

Rahim also urged members of the public to play a role and channel any necessary information to the police to ensure the safety and security of the country.
