Ministry to seek explanation from KFC, McDonalds over price increase

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) is seeking explanation from fast-food restaurant chains Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and McDonalds over the issue of price increase of their food items.

Its deputy enforcement chief Datuk Iskandar Halim Sulaiman said officers from the ministry had begun checks at several KFC restaurants from today.

“We have done several checks this morning and my officers have sought explanation from KFC over the price increase,” he said, as reported in local news portal Astro Awani.

Iskandar said the ministry, acting on public complaints, would also seek explanation from McDonalds restaurants in the Klang Valley over the same issue.

“Yes, we will look at price of food items at McDonalds as well. Currently, the issue is on KFC but we will also find more information from McDonalds on the price increase,” he said.

On Wednesday, QSR Brands (M) Holdings Berhad managing director Datuk Seri Mohamed Azahari Mohamed Kamil in a statement that KFC had increased the price of its food items starting this month following a 6 per cent SST implementation.

Azhari, speaking to news portal Malaysiakini, said the “marginal adjustments” to the price of the products would ensure that customers would be able to get “the same quality, finger-licking good chicken without compromise”.
