School exams scrapped to make students more creative: Maszlee

TANGKAK: The abolishment of exams for lower primary schools is hoped to encourage pupils to be more creative and enthusiastic about going to school.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the move was hoped to transform primary education that was previously exam-oriented.

“We hope teachers would be more creative in unearthing their pupils’ potentials and talents while making sure that they are eager and love going to school.

“The attention and focus on the fun aspect of learning in the classroom needs to be also enhanced to ensure that pupils receive optimum benefits and develop the different potentials in each of them,” he said after visiting SK Ledang on the first day of school on Tuesday.

He said the ministry would also focus on reducing teachers’ workload.

“I will announce a good news for teachers in reducing their workload in my New Year’s speech on Jan 14.

“I hope the initiatives that would be announced soon would give a sense of relief and boost their spirits in educating the children,” he said.

Meanwhile, Maszlee said the ministry was in the midst of studying the best formula to strengthen the country’s education curriculum.

“The National Policy and Advisory Council is drafting and analysing the best formula based on the findings and feedback from all quarters,” he said.

Also present was Johor Education director Shaharudin Sharif.

Maszlee had last year announced the abolishment of examinations for Year One, Two and Three pupils and would be replaced with a more objective assessment.
