Solving Kelantan's stray cattle problem

KOTA BARU: The problem of stray cattle in the state’s Pasir Putih and Rantau Panjang districts has caught the attention of Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

“The problem of stray cattle, especially along the roads early in the morning and late at night, is unique to Kelantan,” she said.

“In other (states), they are facing problems with dogs.”

Zuraida said the ministry would help local councils to deal with the issue.

“We will try to come up with a mechanism at the local council level to give them the power to capture and put the livestock in a suitable place,” she said after meeting the state executive councillor in charge of local government and local council presidents here today.

“There are by-laws under the local government for this issue and enforcement is already being implemented, but the problem is how to handle the livestock.

“All this while, the authiority to capture the cattle was given to the Veterinary Department.

“In every operation, veterinary officers must be present, but they don’t have the numbers to cope up with the job.

“Therefore, we can give the power to capture and place the livestock in a safer area to the local government authorities before the animals are claimed by their owners.”

Moving on to other matters, Zuraida said there were no abandoned housing projects under Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia.

However, she said there were 12 projects developed by private companies in Kelantan that were abandoned 30 years ago.

She said the ministry would try to “save” the projects.
