A national commitment to fight graft

THE newly-launched National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) requires the fullest commitment of all to make it successful, and free Malaysia of graft by 2023.

Senior vice-chairman of Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the government on its part, should lead by example and must not tolerate all forms of corrupt practise.

"The implementation of the five-year anti-corruption plan must be effectively monitored at all stages. Enforcement without fear and favour is also essential for its success."

Lee said the NACP must be promoted through all media, including holding awareness campaigns among all government departments and agencies, private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and right down to the community.

"The fight against corruption must also involve everyone who has a role to play. Teaching the young from kindergarten to university level about the evil of corruption must be done if we are to succeed in building an anti-corruption culture.

According to Lee, elements of anti-corruption awareness must be included in the school curriculum under the subject of religious and moral education.

"In the fight against corruption, emphasis must be given to schools where we could educate students from young to loathe corruption in the same way they are taught to hate drugs.

"We have to teach students moral values at a young age so that when they leave school or university and enter the workplace, they would have realised the importance of not getting involved in corruption.

"We must adopt zero tolerance towards corruption and it must be promoted throughout the nation using all available resources."
