Work at Bukit Kukus project site resumes

GEORGE TOWN: The stop-work order issued against the Bukit Kukus paired road project soon after a landslide last October, which claimed nine lives, has been lifted by the Department of Safety and Health (DOSH).

The order, slapped against the project contractor, Syarikat Yuta Sdn Bhd, was lifted on Monday.

A statement issued by the Penang Island City Council communications department said that the council also lifted its stop-work order on the same day.

“At this point in time, the contractor is still carrying out mitigation works on the hill-slopes.

“It is also carrying out a re-evaluation to improve safety precautions at the worksite while a method statement is prepared,” the statement read.

The statement also noted that the contractor had appointed an additional consultant to conduct temporary work and monitor all progress at the site.

“The project is now at 73.24 per cent complete and construction work is expected to be completed by next year,” it added, noting that the project consultant and the council would conduct strict site inspections and monitoring to ensure utmost safety.

“The strict monitoring will also ensure all works are conducted in accordance with the project specifications,” it added.

A landslide at the project site last October killed nine foreign workers. DOSH and the council issued stop-work orders against the project pending investigations into the incident.

A special committee was formed by the state government to investigate the incident.

Earlier this month, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state executive councillors had received the full report on the investigations into the incident but it was still waiting for the findings from DOSH.
