Cherry on top: PM congratulates M'sian chefs on World Pastry Cup triumph

KUALA LUMPUR: The team of Malaysian pastry chefs crowned champions of the World Pastry Cup 2019 (Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie) in Lyon, France, recently can add another feather to its cap.

The group was given a pat on the back today by none other than Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Congratulations #TeamMalaysia. Malaysians are proud over this achievement. Malaysia Boleh!,” Dr Mahathir tweeted.

The team comprises the Head Chef of School of Hospitality, Sunway University, Patrick Siau; Tan Wei Loon; Otto Tay; and Loi Ming Ai.

Malaysia defeated 20 teams from around the world, including Japan and Italy, in the finals of the competition on Jan 28.

The chefs had been tasked with producing three chocolate desserts with Valrhona grands crus; three frozen fruit desserts from the Ravifruit range; 15 identical desserts on plate; and artistic creations made of sugar, chocolate and sculpted hydric ice.

The World Pastry Cup is an international event held biennially to recognise the best young pastry talents worldwide.

The finalist selection process involves more than 50 rounds in France and four continental selection events in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.
