More than 800 summonses issued in Kelantan in last 24 hours

KOTA BARU: Kelantan police have issued 881 summonses to motorists in the last 24 hours' operation in conjunction with Chinese New Year celebrations.

State Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department chief Superintendent Markandan Subramaniam said 522 of the summonses were for speeding, 12 for overtaking and another six for using mobile phones while driving.

He said the 881 summonses were issued from 12am on Feb 5 until 12am last night.

He said the operation codenamed `Ops Selamat 14’ covered all over the state and it began on Dec 29.

During the past 24-hour period, he said the traffic police also recorded 48 accidents throughout the state.

Kota Baru recorded the highest number with 14 cases, followed by Kuala Krai (seven) and Tumpat (six).

“Out of the 48 cases, one involved fatal accident whereby an 81-year-old motorcyclist was killed when his bike collided with another motorcycle in Pasir Puteh,” he said.

Markandan said a total of 233 accidents were recorded since the operation was launched with four people killed.

“Since Dec 29, we also issued 5,702 summonses to motorists for various offences,” he said.
