Selangor records highest number of Chikungunya cases since January

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 39 cases of Chikungunya have been recorded nationwide earlier this year up until Feb 7 with Selangor recorded the highest number of cases.

Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor recorded 23 cases followed by Melaka (9), Kelantan (6) and Perlis (1).

“Preventive and control measures have been implemented after a Chikungunya case was reported on Jan 29 in Tanjung Sepat, Selangor.

“A total of 23 Chikungunya cases were confirmed and all patients have been treated as outpatients and no deaths were reported,” he said in a statement today.

He said in the period, a total of 1,740 houses were fogged and ‘gotong royong’ activities were carried out in the areas with highest breeding rate of Aedes mosquitoes which is 3.8 per cent.

Dr Noor Hisham urged the public and community committees to increase their cleaning activities to destroy the mosquitoes’ breeding grounds in their respective areas.

He added that community involvement to ensure a clean environment free from Aedes mosquitoes could prevent the spread of Chikungunya, dengue and Zika. — BERNAMA
