PM: Msia always supports any form of cooperation

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has no issue with the positive development between United States and North Korea.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia always supported any form of cooperation.

“Any attempt to work together will be welcomed by us. What we don’t want to see is confrontation and conflict,” said the prime minister after presenting Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia membership cards to seven former Umno leaders.

It was reported that US President Donald Trump had confirmed that a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would be held in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi on Feb 27 and 28.

Trump and Jong Un had their first historic meeting at the Sentosa Island in Singapore in June 2018.

On Malaysia’s ties with North Korea, Dr Mahathir described it to be rocky following the death of Jong Un’s half brother

“We have problem with North Korea following the death of the North Korean here,” he said.

In this respect, Dr Mahathir said Malaysia would resolve its issues with North Korea.

“We will settle that problem later. On whether we will reopen our embassy, we will settle that problem later.”

Dr Mahathir was quoted last year saying that Malaysia would reopen its embassy in Pyongyang.

Malaysia’s once-close ties with North Korea were downgraded after Kim Jong Nam was murdered at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) in February 2017 when two women allegedly smeared his face with VX nerve agent.
