RTD: No new Awas cameras installed

PUTRAJAYA: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has rubbished rumours on social media claiming that new speed trap cameras have been installed by the department.

It said claims that new Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras, now known as Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas), have been installed at the 26 locations along the North-South Expressway (PLUS) are false.

The fake information listed areas including Alor Setar-Pedang at KM63.3; Pendang-Gurun (KM72.2); Tapah-Sungkai (KM352), Slim River (KM375.9); Bukit Beruntung-Sungai Buaya (KM429.2) and Rawang-Sungai Buloh (KM443.9).

“There is no installation of new cameras as what has been claimed. So far, Awas cameras can be found at 45 locations nationwide to catch those speeding and running red lights.

“In this respect, the public are advised to verify any information with the relevant authorities. They should not easily believe and spread fake news without verifying its authenticity with proper sources.

“Information on the location of the Awas cameras has been updated and available at www.jpj.gov.my. Any new development will be updated from time to time,” said RTD in a statement today.

The speed trap cameras, RTD said, could be found in Johor at KM151.4 Plus Highway-Pagoh (northbound); KM146.8 Plus Highway-Pagoh (southbound); KM1 Plus Highway-Johor Bahru (northbound); KM1 Plus Highway-Johor Bahru (southbound); and it Melaka at KM214.4 Plus Highway-Alor Gajah (southbound); KM214.4 Plus Highway-Alor Gajah (northbound); KM184.2 Plus Highway-Jasin (northbound); and KM185 Plus Highway-Jasin (southbound).

In Selangor, it added, the speed trap cameras were located at KM18 GCE Highway (northbound); KM18 GCE Highway (southbound); KM28.4 Elite Highway (northbound) and KM17 Elite Highway (southbound).

In Kedah, these cameras are placed at KM96.3 Kuala Muda (south bound); KM97.2 Plus Highway-Kuala Muda (north bound) and KM174 Plus Highway-Bandar Baharu (north bound). There is only one Awas camera in Penang at KM166 Plus Highway-Seberang Perai Selatan (southbound).

Drivers in Perak should be aware of the Awas cameras at KM375.9 Plus Highway-Slim River (north bound); KM204.6 Plus Highway-Taiping (northbound); KM299.9 Plus Highway-Kampar (north bound) and KM382.8 Plus Highway-Behrang (southbound).

The Awas cameras in Negri Sembilan are at KM21 Kajang-Seremban Highway (LEKAS) (southbound) and KM21 Kajang-Seremban Highway (LEKAS) (northbound). For Terengganu, these cameras are found at KM256.1 East Coast Expressway and KM288.6 East Coast Expressway.

At the federal roads, RTD said, speed trap cameras are installed at KM85.5 Jalan Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur, Sungkai and at KM17 Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai.

Only three states — Kedah, Perak and Kuala Lumpur — have Awas cameras installed to monitor motorists who run red lights.

In Kedah, these cameras have been installed at KM36 Jalan Alor Star-Butterworth/Kuala Muda (Alor Setar bound); KM1 Jalan Gurun-Sik/Kuala Muda (Gurun bound); KM1 Jalan Gurun-Sik/Kuala Muda (Sik bound) and KM54 Jalan Alor Setar-Butterworth.

In Perak, these cameras are located at Jalan Pasir Puteh; KM26, jalan Ipoh-Kuala Kangsar; KM4 Jalan Setiawan-Lumut/Mahjung (Lumut bound); KM4 Jalan Setiawan-Lumut/Mahjung (Setiawan bound); KM116 Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur/Batang Padang-Slim River (Kuala Lumpur bound); KM116 Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur/Batang Padang-Slim River (Ipoh bound); KM11, Jalan Setiawan, Ipoh (Setiawan bound); KM14, Jalan Ipoh-Pusing, Ipoh (Setiawan bound); KM38 Jalan Ipoh-Kampar, Kampar (Ipoh bound) and KM8 teluk Intan-Hutan Melintang/Hilir Perak-Teluk Intan.

In Kuala Lumpur, such cameras are located at jalan Klang Lama-Jalan Sepadu and jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur (Sentul bound).

The operation of two Awas cameras found in Selangor at KM6.6 Jalan Kajang, Puchong (SKVE) and KM301.6 Plus Highway, Kajang and one camera in Putrajaya at KM1.6 Lebuh Sentosa, however, has been put on hold pending a location review.
