'Minimise outdoor activities, drink more water, wear caps'

KUALA LUMPUR: Extreme weather conditions are wreaking havoc.

Kids are collapsing after sports’ day sprint this week and many are reaching for sweaters because it’s cold in the evenings.

What can we do about it?

Meteorological Department director-general Datuk Alui Bahari said outdoor activities should be minimised until the end of March.

“Reduce open burning and minimise outdoor activities until April.

“This is our advice for the next few weeks.”

Senior lecturer Dr Mohd Yusoff of Universiti Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Environmental Studies faculty said: “Parents and teachers need to realise that with the current weather conditions, we need to adapt.

“Instead of having sports sessions in the evenings, why not do it earlier in the day?

“We know the weather is erratic and we have to prepare for this.

“Teachers must tell kids to take routine breaks and hydrate.

“That’s essential. No one can stand the heat without replenishing their selves.”

Parent Action Group for Education chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said caps should be an option for kids.

“It’s not a fashion statement, it’s a necessity. It’s all a matter of adapting to the weather, be it sunglasses or caps.

“Why not? It’s all in the interest of the kids. Simple changes to school timetables and attire can help.

“We need to be practical and move with the times.”
