MCMC denies claim of closure of Internet centres nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has denied a claim by Nusuara Technologies Sdn Bhd that Internet centres across the country will be closed down.

In a statement yesterday, the commission said that the allegation by the major operator of Celcom's Internet centres was a careless move.

"MCMC has no intention of closing down the centres and the allegation is totally untrue," it said.

It added that both Nusuara Technologies and Celcom have been asked to provide an explanation on the matter.

There are currently 870 Internet centres operational nationwide under the Universal Service Provision (USP) Programme, which is one of MCMC’s initiatives to provide access to basic telephony and Internet services throughout the country.

Apart from providing high-speed broadband internet services, ICT courses, training and e-commerce opportunities, the programme helps enhance the skills of local communities and strengthens local economies, MCMC said. -- Bernama
