KLANG: A Myanmar man was killed while three of his friends were severely injured after being struck by lightning at the Setia Badminton Academy football field, in Setia Alam on Sunday.
It is learnt that deceased, known only as Rohimullah, 19, had gone to the field to support his friends who had a friendly match with a local team before the 5pm tragedy.
Others injured in the incident are Abdul Rahman Abul Hussin, 30; Kamaluddin Abu Tahir, 30; and Hussein Ahmad Asod Ali, 20.
They were reported to be severely injured and were receiving treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR).
The victim's friend, Mohamed Noor Zafar,19, said Rohimullah was sitting beside him playing with his mobile phone before lightning struck.
"I was playing in a friendly match before the tragedy. Rohimullah only came to support our team, Klang Rohingya Football Club.
"However, the match was cancelled due to the weather. I then contacted our bus driver to take us home.
“While waiting for the bus, a thunderstorm started. Rohimullah, who was sitting in the middle of the field, was struck by lightning.
"His shirt caught fire," he said when met HTAR.
Mohamed Noor said it was the norm for his football club to play a friendly match with a local team either on a Saturday or a Sunday.
He added they are all UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) card holders, and live and work around the Meru wholesale market.
Meanwhile, the victim's brother, only known as Aro Fulla, 22, said he was unaware that his brother had gone to the field to support their friends.
"I only learnt of the news when I got the call from my uncle, I was at home at the time.
"He didn't tell me that he was going to the field. I have already contacted my family in Myanmar (to tell them the news).
“I am shock and still trying to fathom what happened. But what can I do, he is already gone," he said before bursting into tears.
