NZ terror attack: Penang lawmakers to accompany Rahimi Ahmad's family to Christchurch

GEORGE TOWN: Two lawmakers from the state government will accompany the family of critically-injured Penangite Rahimi Ahmad to Christchurch, New Zealand, on Saturday.

The 39-year-old from Kampung Binjai, here, is one of four Malaysians who were hurt in the terrorist attacks at two mosques in Christchurch on Friday which killed 49 Muslim worshippers.

The father-of-two was shot in the abdomen and has undergone surgery to remove a bullet.

According to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, state Caring Society and Welfare Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Aziz Mahathir will represent the state government to the South Island city.

The two will travel with Rahimi’s mother, Rokiah Mohammad, 65 and his elder brother, Roshidi, 42.

“We, the Penang government, condemn the mass shooting incident, which has since claimed 49 lives and injured tens others.

“Following the incident, we got in touch with the family of Rahimi, who is reported to be in critical condition.

“We express our heartfelt sympathies and extend our condolences to the people of New Zealand and to the affected families. We hope they will remain tough in facing this challenge.

“Our prayers are with them,” he said in a statement tonight.

Chow added that the Penang government will render all necessary assistance, and together with the people of Penang, will pray for the wellbeing of the people of Christchurch.
