NZ terror attack: Rahimi's condition improving

KUALA LUMPUR: Rahimi Ahmad who was shot during the mosque attack in Christchurch, New Zealand last week is still being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Christchurch Hospital.

The 39-year-old is getting better, according to Dr Mohamad Firdaus Mohamad Hanib, who is a Malaysian working at the hospital.

In a Facebook post, Dr Mohamad Firdaus said Rahimi is now able to communicate slowly apart from being able to move his hands slightly.

He also informed that Rahimi is no longer dependant on a respiratory machine.

"He is still very much in pain and the medical team is trying to control this using medication," he said.

Dr Mohamad Firdaus said he told Rahimi about his picture with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern that has gone viral in Malaysia, and also informed him that Malaysians are praying for his health.

"That gave him hope and will.

"I hope we will continue to pray because they still need our prayers and support," he said.

Apart from Rahimi, Dr Mohamad Firdaus said he also visited Mohd Nazril Hisham Omar, 46, who was also injured in the shooting.

He informed that Mohd Nazril appears to be in good condition.

Another Malaysian injured in the attack was Mohd Tarmizi Shuib, 42.

Meanwhile, in the same Facebook post, Dr Mohamad Firdaus shared a photo taken with All Blacks rugby star Sonny Bill Williams.

Dr Mohamad Firdaus said Williams' presence was important as he was a Muslim icon and a well-known figure in New Zealand.

"Yesterday, during Friday prayers, I only saw him (Williams) from afar. Today I get to meet him as he visited Nazril and Rahimi," Dr Mohamad Firdaus said.

Christchurch was rocked by a terror attack last Friday at the Linwood Mosque and Al Noor Mosque. The attack killed 50 and injured over 40 others.

The sole Malaysian who died in the incident was Mohd Tarmizi's son, Muhammad Haziq, 17.
