Record number of butterflies released at National Science Centre [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 600 butterflies were released at the National Science Centre’s Garden of Nature today, making it the largest number of butterflies ever to be released simultaneously in Malaysia.

The butterflies were of 10 different species, including Captosilia, Apilio, Junonia, Danaus and Euploe.

The event was held in conjunction with National Science Week 2019, which runs from April 1 to 7.

The feat earned itself a place in the Malaysia Book of Records.

Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Azhar Yahaya said they chose to release butterflies as they were a symbol of peace, beauty and a healthy ecosystem.

“Apart from being one of the agents that help trees produce flowers and fruits as well as grain, butterflies are also sources of food for other animals,” he said.

Azhar urged the public to visit the National Science Centre during National Science Week, especially during the weekend.

“They can come and enjoy the latest exhibits which are showcased here,” he said, adding that entrance to the National Science Centre during National Science Week was free of charge.
