Loke: Govt not planning to implement End-of-Life vehicle policy

PUTRAJAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke has denied a news report that the government is planning to implement an End-of-Life vehicle (ELV) policy.

He revealed that a study was carried out on the policy, but that the government decided against implementing the ruling which would require that inspections be conducted on old vehicles before they could be given the go-ahead for road tax and insurance renewal.

“It is fake news. As of now, we do not plan to implement an ELV policy.

“The authority to implement such a policy lies with the ministry and (would be) executed by the Road Transport Department (RTD), and not other agencies,” he told a press conference after attending RTD’s 73rd anniversary celebration here, today.

Loke was commenting on a news report which quoted Malaysia Automotive, Robotic and Internet of Things Institute (MARii) chief executive officer Datuk Madani Sahari as saying that the government will announce a review on the national car policy in the second half of the year and revive plans to implement the ELV.

Loke said that the current policy only requires that vehicles without renewed road tax after 12 months must undergo checks at the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom), regardless of their age.

“The public should not be alarmed, as there is no plan to implement this (ELV) yet,” he said.
