Sarawak allocates RM100,000 to rebuild 25-door longhouse

SELANGAU: Sarawak has allocated RM100,000 to rebuild Rumah Umpang longhouse located at Jalan Dijih Selangau here, which was destroyed by fire on Thursday.

Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo said the allocation would be used to rebuild the 25-door longhouse at a new site.

“The funding will be channeled into the Tellian state constituency account while waiting for necessary process and related procedures to be concluded,” he said.

Apart from that, an emergency fund of RM3,000 was also disbursed to the victims to purchase necessities such as canvas camps and milk formula for babies.

“Some affected villagers are seeking shelter at the canvas camp while others are staying with their relatives at nearby longhouses,” he added.

The Community Welfare Department meanwhile had given items such as mattress and food supply to the victims.

“Our department will give RM300 for each affected students to buy replacement uniforms and stationery while each door will have RM700 to buy new kitchen equipment. As for individual assistance, each victim will receive RM100,” said the Mukah Welfare offier Aziah Saruji.

A RM5,000 construction assistance for each door was in the midst of being approved.

On Thursday, a 25-door longhouse was razed by fire at 8.30pm, leaving 160 people homeless. However, no one was injured or killed in the fire.
