Proposal to raise quota for non-Bumi students to be brought to Cabinet

PUTRAJAYA: The proposal to increase the non-Bumiputera quota for the Education Ministry’s Matriculation Programme will be brought to the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Director-General of Education Datuk Dr Amin Senin said the matter would be raised by the Minister of Education for the attention of cabinet ministers.

“The Ministry of Education takes a serious view of various issues arising out of admission to the ministry’s Matriculation Programme.

“Taking into account the views of all parties, the ministry will ensure that these issues are dealt with carefully, to find the best solution through the proper channels,” he said in a statement today.

Amin added that, based on need, the MOE was sticking to the original policy of a quota of 90 per cent for Bumiputera students and 10 per cent for non-Bumiputeras.

“This year, improvements have been made, while maintaining the 90:10 policy, the intake also offers opportunity to 60 per cent students from low-income families, B40,” he added.

Amin said the ministry had reviewed all proposals, including increasing the non-Bumiputera quota which must be in line with the original policy of 90:10.

“Annually, there is a total intake capacity of only 25,000.

“So, the current policy is 22,500 places for Bumiputera students and 2,500 for non-Bumiputeras.

“This programme was created initially for Bumiputeras only,” he added.
