Muslims in Malaysia to start fasting tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Muslims in Malaysia will usher in the holy month of Ramadan tomorrow, signalling the start of a month-long fasting.

The Keeper of the Rulers' Seal, Datuk Seri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, according to Bernama, announced that the date for the start of Ramadan fasting has been fixed for tomorrow, as decreed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong after receiving the consent of the Malay rulers.

His announcement was broadcast live by national television channel, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) tonight.

Syed Danial had previously stated that the date for the sighting of the new moon, to determine the beginning of fasting for Muslims in Malaysia has been fixed for today.

He added that the Council of Rulers had agreed that the way to fix the date for the beginning of the fast will be based on "rukyah and hisab” (sighting of the new moon and astronomical calculations).
