Airport iftar: Breaking fast, in plane sight

KOTA BARU: Every individual or family will have their own way of breaking fast, whether it is at home, restaurant or even the mosque.

However, for some, they prefer to do it out in the open in a casual and relaxed manner.

This is more so when it is done along the outer perimeter of the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, Pengkalan Chepa, near here.

A check showed that the 100-metre outer perimeter of the airport has become a favourite spot for Muslims seeking to break their fast during Ramadan.

Family members and friends begin gathering at the spot from 6.50pm onwards, passing their time by watching the take-off and landing of planes at the airport.

Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) student Nurulnazirah Mad Yusuf, 26, said this was the first time she and her friends Wan Nur Atiqah Wan Shamsudin, 23, and Nurul Natasah Zul Azhar, 24, broke their fast on the move.

"We departed from Terengganu at 2pm to settle some matters in Kota Baru, and decided to stop here upon seeing the crowd.

"At first, I did not know that they are waiting to break their fast. Since it was already close to Maghrib, we went to the nearby Ramadan bazaar to buy food and have our meals together," she added.

Government officer Salina Ali, 38, said she and her family prefer to break their fast at a casual location rather than in a food outlet, where they would have to wait for their turn to order food.

"It’s better to break fast this way because you do not need to rush home, and worse get stuck in the traffic.

"You only need to buy food at the Ramadan bazaar and find a good place to break fast together.

"Practically every year, we make it 'mandatory' to break fast this way. This Ramadan, I have twice broken fast on the move." she added.
