2 MRT SSP Line trains arrive from South Korea

KUALA LUMPUR: Two trains for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) Line have arrived in Malaysia after a 10-day journey by sea.

The trains, with a capacity of 1,200 passengers each, were assembled in Changwon, South Korea, by Hyundai-Rotem.

The MRT SSP Line will eventually have 49 train sets plying the route.

MRT Corp strategic communications and stakeholder relations director Datuk Najmuddin Abdullah said the trains were
expected to be transported to the Sungai Buloh Depot yesterday night and on June 11.

“The trains that arrived on Thursday morning at Westport were the only two which were completely built up in South Korea and shipped to Malaysia by MRT Corp’s Electric Trains and Depot Equipment contractor, the HAP Consortium.

“The other train sets are being assembled in Rasa, Hulu Selangor, and components of the trains are being shipped from South Korea.

“The testing and commissioning for the trains as well as other system works of the MRT SSP Line will only take place when the line is about to be opened, with Phase 1 expected to open in July 2021.

“Prior to that, the trains will undergo tests such as static tests and integration tests,” he said.

Each of the 90m-long trains has a maximum speed of 110kph.

On the construction of the MRT SSP Line, Najmuddin said it had reached 50 per cent.

A video of the two trains was shared on MRT’s Instagram account, garnering wide interest among the public.

The 52.2km SSP Line is the second line of the Klang Valley MRT project to be developed.

It will have 35 stations, of which 24 are elevated and 11 underground.

Phase 1 of the line is set to be launched by July 2021 and will commence full operations by July 2022.

It is expected to serve two million people around Sungai Buloh, Kuala Lumpur city centre and its southern suburbs, as well as Putrajaya.
