Al-Azhar University student from Terengganu dies

KUALA TERENGGANU: An Al-Azhar University student who was in a critical condition due to brain hemorrhage died at the Safarat Hospital in Cairo yesterday (June 13).

Mohammad Fahmi Faizzudin Asyraf Mohd Shukri was 24.

The third-year Syariah student at the university died at 2pm (8pm Malaysian time).

Terengganu Syariah Implementation, Education and Higher Education Committee deputy chairman Maliaman Kassim, when contacted by Bernama, said Mohammad Fahmi Faizzudin Asyraf was buried yesterday evening.

Mohammad Fahmi Faizzudin Asyraf was rushed to the hospital at 2.07am on Wednesday (8.07am Malaysian time) after he fell unconscious and was forced to undergo surgery following a brain hemorrhage.

News on the student’s predicament went viral on social media since Wednesday night after a crowdfunding was initiated to raise RM40,000 to cover his medical costs.

The Terengganu government had approved an emergency allocation of RM10,000 for his parents’ flight and accommodation expenses to visit him in Cairo.

Maliaman, who is also Ajil assemblyman, said he and Mohammad Fahmi Faizzudin Asyraf’s parents, Mohd Shukri Husin, 54, and Norhayati Jusoh, 51, would leave for Egypt tomorrow morning.

“His mother told us that the last time he was home was during Aidilfitri last year and he had complained of headaches in their WhatsApp conversations,” he said. – Bernama
