These prickly 'Magnificent Seven' are roti canai enthusiasts [NSTTV]

ARAU: Porcupines usually stick to a diet of fruits and plants but that is not the case for these "Magnificent Seven" in Perlis.

Pets of an Arau retiree Mohd Khalid Amad, 67, these seven porcupines enjoy roti canai and capati.

Mohd Khalid said when he first started keeping them, he fed them fruits.

However, about two years ago, a nearby stall donated roti canai and capati to his family and the leftovers were given to the porcupines.

"We did not want to throw out the leftovers, so together with my kids, I tried feeding it to the porcupines in the cage. They scrambled for it and it was all gone in the blink of an eye.

"Since then, I started making roti canai and capati as compulsory food for my porcupines," he said when met at his home, here, today.

Mohd Khalid said he would feed them their favourite meal twice a day.

"Usually I will give it (roti canai) to them in the morning and late afternoon. In the afternoon and at night, I will feed them a diet of pumpkins and turnips.

"Porcupines are usually active at night because they will hunt for food when it is dark," he added.

He also said that his porcupines would appear somewhat sad and not active if they were not given roti canai or capati the whole day.

"When I see them like that (inactive), I will immediately give them food or replace it (roti canai or capati) with vegetables," he said.
