Hotel urged to take action against gym Peeping Tom

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan has urged a five-star hotel here to act immediately on a complaint by a woman that a staff recorded a video of her showering at the gym earlier this month.

Its complaints bureau chief H’ng Khoon Leng said the 30-year-old woman had lodged the report on June 9, the day the incident happened at 10pm.

"The hotel staff was interrogated and his mobile phone confiscated for forensic investigation process, but was subsequently released.

“It has been 10 days since and no one has been charged yet.

"Even the hotel management was not cooperative when she (the victim) complained to them," he said at a press conference here today.

The woman, who only wanted to be identified as Chan, said she saw someone holding a mobile phone above her cubicle door while she was showering.

She, however, could not recognise the person.

Chan then called her husband, and together they went to complain to the hotel management.

They requested for the closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage but the hotel refused.

She suspected that the culprit might be one of the gym staff.

Chan said the gym management revealed the footage two days later, which showed a man entering the women's restroom on the night of the incident.

"Instead of taking action against the man, they asked me if I want to cancel my gym membership and offered me free buffet vouchers instead.

"We want the hotel to take full responsibility over the incident and assures guests of their safety and privacy," she added.

When contacted, Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang advised the victim to refer to the police on the case.

"We advise them to meet our officers for assistance," he said in a message today.
