KOTA BELUD: An unexploded World War II bomb was discovered by a group of construction workers as they were conducting cleaning works at a transmitter construction site near here, at about 12pm yesterday.
A report on the find was immediately lodged at the Kota Belud district police headquarters.
Kota Belud district police chief Superintendent Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the bomb was uncovered by an excavator which was conducting digging works at the site.
He said the bomb is a Shell 105mm artillery, measuring 50 centimetres long, with a circumference of 40 centimetres.
"As soon as the report was made, police immediately ordered the evacuation of construction workers and residents of a nearby village, as a precautionary measure.
"Police also closed the main route to the location and cordoned off the area with police barricade tape," he said when contacted by Harian Metro.
A team from the bomb disposal unit from the Sabah police headquarters was then sent to the site to detonate the explosive.
Mohd Zaidi said the operation ended at 12.40pm.
"There was no untoward incident or injury during the operation," he added.
