Tanjung Bungah landslide: Three bodies of Myanmar workers found

GEORGE TOWN: Rescuers have discovered three out of four victims who were feared buried in a landslide incident at the holiday resort in Tanjung Bungah, here, last night.

The first victim was discovered about 11.20am, the second about midnight and the third at 12.15am.

Efforts are underway to extricate the bodies.

All four foreign workers, from Myanmar, are feared dead.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang said the search and rescue operation would proceed until all four victims are accounted for.

He said the four construction workers have been working to build a retaining wall for the past week after the resort owner noticed soil movement at the cliff near the resort.

"He hired them to build a retaining wall. The four started work about a week ago.

“However, he was unsure of their identities and other personal details,” he told newsmen at the scene early this morning.

Asked if the owner had obtained approval to carry out the works, Che Zaimani said approval was not necessary as it was a private property.
