IWK explains Sungai Keluang pollution issue

GEORGE TOWN: Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) has confirmed that the Bayan Baru sewage treatment plant near Sungai Keluang, which was recently found to be polluted, was undergoing upgrading works.

In a statement, IWK said the project was being carried out by the Sewage Services Department since 2015.

“The operations and maintenance of the sewage treatment plant is carried out by JPP’s appointed contractor, Wildad Builders Sdn Bhd, during the whole process of upgrading.

“All matters related to the treatment activities at the sewage treatment plant will be addressed by Wildad immediately... they are responsible to liaise with the authorities in due process,” the statement read.

IWK was responding to state Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh’s statement on Friday that pollution in Sungai Keluang near the Bayan Lepas Industrial Zone here was believed to have been discharge from the water treatment facility.

Phee had said that while the Department of Environment (DoE) had been conducting an investigation to pinpoint the exact cause, the initial investigation revealed that the cause was likely discharge from the IWK treatment facility.

“Our DoE officers are investigating. We are working with IWK on this issue. We have been informed that IWK is doing some upgrading works and DoE has taken action to remedy the matter,” he was quoted as saying.
