Missing Dutch tourist found dead in Mulu National Park

MIRI: A 66-year-old tourist from Holland who had been missing since Friday evening following a flash flood at the Mulu National Park was found dead this morning.

A local guide who was with the tourist is still missing.

A Sarawak Forestry Corporation spokesperson said a group of 10, including a guide, had entered the cave before it was hit by a flash flood on Friday.

Eight of them managed to escape, but the Dutch tourist and the guide were reported missing around 6pm.

The Fire and Rescue Department said, in a statement, that the body of the tourist was found at 6.40am today.

The victim was identified as Peter Hans and is believed to have drowned in the flash flood.

His body will be flown to Miri by the department’s air unit using a M17 helicopter, the statement said.

Meanwhile, efforts to locate the missing 20-year-old tourist guide, Roviezal Robin, are focused on a 3km radius from the park’s base camp to the cave.

The search and rescue team of 16 are also searching up to a distance of 2km into the cave.
