924 dengue cases, one death recorded in Sarawak

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded a total of 924 dengue cases and one death from January to June this year, compared to 271 cases for the same period last year.

State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the state's capital recorded the highest number of cases, 363, and one fatality.

This is followed by 114 cases in Miri, Betong (108), Sibu (88), Samarahan (75), Kapit (53), Serian (53), Sarikei (43), Bintulu (34), Limbang (19), Sri Aman (18) and Mukah (11).

Speaking at the anti-dengue campaign held at the Stutong Community Market here yesterday (July 14), he said 10 cumulative localities of the epidemic were still active in Sarawak, including six areas in Kuching - Jalan Song Kheng Hai, Tabuan Tengah Sudat, Stampin Tengah, Tabuan Hj Drahman and Selangan Batu were among the affected areas.

Dr Sim reminded the public, especially those who were staying or working in the affected areas, to seek treatment immediately if they developed any signs of dengue fever.

"Also, it's always important to keep their houses' compound and drains clean to prevent them from becoming breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitos," he added.
