11 residents fined RM500 for breeding mosquitos

TAWAU: Eleven residents were fined RM500 yesterday, for breeding mosquitoes at their respective compounds in Taman Apas Permai here.

The compounds were issued by the district health office during its Ops Gempur Aedes, which saw health officers inspecting 77 residences.

District environment health officer Rahman Sampe, in a statement today, said the operation was aimed at controlling the spread of dengue and prevent an outbreak.

“A total of 255 houses and premises were supposed to be inspected but some of them were locked. Either there was no one at home or (the houses and premises) are not yet occupied.

“Of the ones inspected, 11 owners were issued with compounds for an offence under Section 13(1) of the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 (for prohibition on creating conditions likely to propagate or harbour disease-bearing insects),” he said.

He said the health office also issued a notice in accordance with Section 5(2) of the same act to enter and examine premises and homes, in the event that they were locked during the operation.

“We will return to conduct an inspection at these houses or premises during a fixed time and date. I urge the public to give their full cooperation and spend time to inspect the surrounding areas under their care to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
