MARA student falls to his death from Sydney apartment

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian student died after falling off an apartment building in Sydney, Australia today.

Amirul Ashraff Md Azhar, 22, from Taiping, Perak, was a final year Mechatronic Engineering student at the University of Technology Sydney.

He was previously a student of the Langkawi Mara Junior Science College (MRSM).

His father, Md Azhar Hasbullah, 48, said he was told of the incident at 4pm.

“I was contacted by a Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) representative in Australia this evening. I was told that my son fell from his apartment, located about five kilometres from the university.

“I’m still waiting for further details from MARA, as he is a MARA student,” he said when contacted.

Md Azhar said his son had previously told him that he had failed five subjects and needed to file an appeal to MARA.

"My son had already submitted an appeal to MARA. I feel that he was under a lot of pressure. In any case, I’m still waiting for further details from the representatives there.

“He did not tell me of any other problems apart from having failed the five subjects,” he said.

He said the last time he spoke to Amirul Ashraff was on July 30, on his birthday.

Meanwhile, MARA in a statement said Amirul Ashraff died after slipping and falling from his apartment unit.

The information, said MARA, was gleaned from the authorities in Sydney.

“MARA officers in Australia had rushed to the scene as soon as they were informed of the incident, and identified the remains.

“MARA, with help from the embassy, will ensure that the remains are returned to Malaysia as soon as the post-mortem examination is completed.

“We will handle the process of bringing his remains home until he is handed over to his family for burial.

“MARA extends its condolences to the family of Allahyarham Amirul Ashraff.”
