Bukit Aman takes Zakir Naik's statement over racial remarks

KUALA LUMPUR: Controversial Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik has been called in by the police to have his statement recorded over his racially-tinged remarks against Malaysians recently.

The Mumbai-born preacher was believed to have arrived at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman at about 3pm and was seen leaving at 8.15pm.

It was learnt that his statement was recorded by the Federal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department Prosecution/Law Division (D5).

Police have yet to release any official statements over the matter.

It was reported that during his ceramah in Kota Baru last Thursday, Zakir had compared the Hindus in Malaysia to the Muslims in India, by claiming that the Hindus here enjoyed more than 100 times more rights than Muslims in India.

He also alleged that the Hindus here were more loyal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as opposed to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

During the same event, Zakir also called on the Chinese Malaysians to "go back" first as they were the "old guests" of the country.

On Thursday, Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Huzir Mohamed said an investigation paper (IP) has been opened to probe Zakir over his controversial remarks.

Huzir said the probe was opened after a total of 115 police reports were lodged against the preacher as of Thursday.

He said the case would be investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

Zakir, who was granted permanent resident status by the previous government, is wanted in his home country, India, for alleged money laundering and inciting extremism.
