Three schools in Klang closed due to worsening air quality

KLANG: Three schools in the district have been ordered to close immediately due to the very unhealthy air quality caused by haze.

The three schools are Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Kebun, Sekolah Kebangsaan Johan Setia and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jalan Kebun involving 7,046 students.

Selangor Education Department deputy director Muhammad Radzi Abdullah said the schools will be closed until the weather improves.

“The schools will only be allowed to be reopened when the API comes down to a reading of 200 and below,” he said.

However, the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examinations at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil and Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina will proceed as scheduled.

The API in Johan Setia, here, breached the unhealthy level of 211 as at 11am today.

The closure is in line with a circular issued by the Education Ministry in Jan this year which said schools must be shut down immediately when the API reading goes beyond 201.

The department reminded school authorities to keep track of the API reading and to act according to the guidelines stated in the circular when the air quality dips to the unhealthy and very unhealthy levels.

An API reading of 0 to 50 indicates good air quality; 51 to 100, moderate; 101 to 200, unhealthy; 201 to 300, very unhealthy and 300 and above, hazardous.
