Haze daze: 1,484 schools closed

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 1,484 schools were closed as of 1pm today due to the worsening haze situation in the country.

In a statement today, the Education Ministry said the closure has also affected over one million students in seven states which was badly hit by haze.

The state with the highest number of school closure is Selangor with 538 schools involving 584,595 students, followed by Sarawak with 337 schools involving 138,384 students and Perak with 303 closures involving 85,967 students.

Four other states are Penang (162 closure involving 90,233 students), Kuala Lumpur (66 schools and 48,527 students), Negeri Sembilan (53 schools and 28,073 students) and Putrajaya (25 schools and 27,531 students).

The ministry also said any changes and latest information would be updated from time to time.

Schools were also reminded to follow standard operating procedures and priotise students' and teachers' health at all times.

The haze situation in the country, is mainly caused by transboundary haze from Kalimantan, Indonesia, brought about by forest fires.
