Committee to look into Foodpanda's new payment scheme

PUTRAJAYA: A committee comprising representatives of three ministries will look into online food delivery company Foodpanda’s new payment scheme.

The ministries are Human Resources; Youth and Sports; and Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP).

Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran said this was decided at the Cabinet meeting today.

He said the representatives had met FoodPanda managing director Sayantan Das and head of marketing Fabian Emanuel following protests by its riders yesterday.

“FoodPanda has assured that it will monitor the new pay scheme which has been implemented in a few states, before deciding whether it can be reverted to the old scheme.

“They (the representatives) have also mentioned that in all states, except Johor, riders have accepted the new pay scheme that works on an efficiency model (higher number of deliveries yields higher income),” he said in a statement earlier.

Kulasegaran said the government had urged the company to revert to the old pay scheme that was suitable for all of their riders.

More than 200 freelance Foodpanda riders staged protests at two locations yesterday against the new payment scheme.

About 100 of the company’s riders in the Klang Valley gathered at the company’s headquarters at Southgate Cheras from 11am to 2pm to vent their frustration.

It is understood that, under the scheme, riders would be paid between RM7 and RM4.50 for batches of one to six.

The riders claimed that they would not be paid for the actual working hours.

Meanwhile, Kulasegaran said the ministry had been conducting consultations with stakeholders on the Gig Economy.

“This will be brought to Cabinet for deliberation,” he added.
