Climate change action council to be set-up by year end, says Yeo

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Green Technology Corporation, in commemoration with its 10th anniversary, has been rebranded to Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTCCC).

The agency, under Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry (MESTECC), was set up to spearhead Malaysia's green technology uptake.

“This move is consistent with Pakatan Harapan (PH) government’s commitment to keep the civil service lean and to reduce expenditure by optimising delivery.

“Under Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre, we’ll also establish National Council of Climate Change Action as promised in the PH manifesto,” said its Minister Yeo Bee Yin, at the opening of the 10th International Conference on Green Technology and Eco Products (IGEM) 2019, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here today.

Also present were Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof and Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad.

The theme for this three-day event is 'Innovating Sustainability'.

“As a government, we are committed to be innovative in policy making, allowing maximum rooms for private businesses to innovate to gain profits in a business-friendly ecosystem of green industry as well as empowering private individuals and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to innovate to pursue their respective green initiatives in Malaysia.

“In taking the path towards sustainable development, we need to ensure a clear balance of these 3 pillars – the economic growth, a resilient environment and the wellbeing of society,” said Dr Mahathir during his opening speech.

The prime minister also commended Yeo for taking the bold decision in increasing the target of renewable energy in electricity generation mix to 20 per cent by 2025, as promised in the PH manifesto.

Commenting on the process of setting up the council, Yeo said a coordinating body to lead the formation of the council would be established by the end of this year.

“Next year, we will undertake a more integrated and coordinated effort in drafting a global climate change action plan.

“This year, many efforts have been focused on renewable energy through collaborations on the international stage, covering the issue of carbon calculation and various other efforts.

“If we have a dedicated central agency, it will serve as a platform and focus for international industry players, thus facilitating many collaborative efforts and funding processes.”
