Seven missing after boat capsizes off Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: Sabah marine police have launched a search operation for seven people who were feared drowned after a boat they were travelling in capsized in the Marubang waters yesterday.

Police said they were alerted of the incident at 3.05pm and despatched a team to the location. Initial information revealed that there were nine people on board, including two children.

Its chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Pajeri Ali said fishermen have rescued the skipper identified as Long Sahlihi, 29, from the Philippines yesterday while one of the passengers was found dead this morning.

“A team was immediately rushed to the location and found the victim (skipper) in a weak condition and injured.

"He was taken to a nearby health clinic. We then launched a search and rescue operation for the missing passengers," he said in a statement, today.

Mohamad Pajeri said at 9am today, police received a call about a body of a woman found floating in the Tanduo waters, about three nautical miles from shore.

A team, he said was sent to the location to recover the body.

"We are still continuing search for seven people who are still missing." he said.
