TNB prepares for flood season

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is making early preparations as well as taking precautionary measures to minimise damage to electrical installations during the upcoming flood season.

TNB Chief Distribution Network Officer Datuk Baharin Din said flood coordination meetings had been held with the State and District Disaster Management Committees and training sessions had also been held to face possible threats from flood waters.

Preparations include placement of mobile generators and gensets at strategic locations.

Following the flood in 2014, TNB had also taken the initiative to increase the base of electrical substation and to build bunds to prevent water from seeping in during floods.

“An Emergency Response Teams stationed 24-hour a day would also be mobilised to promptly reconnect the power supplies that are being cut off by fallen trees or other causes,” he said.

Baharin said should any substations be submerged in the water during floods, their operations will be halted and electrical reconnection would only be done when it is safe to do so.

TNB would also open an operation room in the affected states to monitor the situation and to distribute the latest information on power supply during the flood.

“Any customers affected by the disruption to electricity connections during flood are advised to call TNB at 15454 or to its Facebook, TNB Careline for immediate action,” he said.

He also advised the public to be careful when using the electrical appliances if their homes are inundated with flood waters.

“Do not touch any electrical appliances or switches with wet or moist hands as it might cause electrocution,” he said.

He said when the flood waters recede, customers are advised to use the service of electrical contractors who are registered with the Energy Commission to check the wiring at their houses or premises.
