New Zealand man found dead at Labuan jetty; foul play suspected

LABUAN: A New Zealand citizen was found dead at the Labuan jetty marina on Sunday, police said today.

The body of Barry James Stanley, 63, was found with various injuries to the head, Bernama reported.

The part-time teacher and Brunei resident arrived at the jetty at around noon with fellow Kiwi, Alistair Charles Muir, to go yachting.

After assisting Stanley in tying up their yacht at the dock, Muir left to have lunch at a nearby hotel.

Upon his return from lunch at 2pm, Muir found his friend lying unconscious on the jetty pathway, bleeding from the mouth.

“He shouted for help at the security guard in the guardhouse, and with help from a Bruneian, they conducted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him, to no avail.

“The ambulance arrived 15 minutes later, and Stanley was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2.45pm,” said Labuan police chief Superintendent Muhamad Farid Ahmad.

He added that an investigation is being carried out to ascertain the cause of death.
